Advent 3

But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water; and he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.” Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” And when he showed him the place, he cut off a stick, and threw it in there, and made the iron float (2 Kings 6:5-6).

In this week's reading, we come across a peculiar narrative where Elisha literally makes a steel axe head swim on water. Out of the sixteen miracles of Elisha recorded in 2 Kings, this one seems a bit out of place. Although an iron axe head floating is a miracle, it seems "small" and "insignificant." However, upon careful meditation upon this text, God spoke to me in a significant way. First, God showed me that he cares. Peter teaches us to "cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). No matter how small or trivial our issues may be, we are called to cast them to God. I have been guilty of not casting my anxiety on God because I felt that God had bigger issues to worry about and that my issues were too small for him. Our relationship with him should not be like that - no matter how small or big our issue may be, he wants us to go to him knowing we matter to God. Second, God is powerful and will use his might to show grace towards us. Just as Elisha responded to the man immediately, God responds immediately by being available to reach out to us in our need. And lastly, God also provides for our needs. God may not provide in the method we want him to, but he provides a way when there seems no way. God didn't have to make the axe head float, he could have simply given the man a new axe head, but he doesn't. The lost axe head is found and restored.
