Too Full?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! … For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. - 1 Corinthians 4:8, 20

I spent last Thursday with three other pastors for a time of worship, prayer, fellowship, and accountability. In our time of worship, we read 1 Corinthians 4. As we were reading the chapter, the Holy Spirit drew my attention to the first part of verse 8, where the Apostle Paul is rebuking the church in Corinth. I could not read past, “Already you have all you want!” This rebuke is not only for the church in Corinth, but also for the churches in America today. The reason we do not experience the power of God in our lives is because we do not seek Him. The reason we do not seek Him is because we already have all we want. Most of us are living comfortably in our heated homes with plenty of food to eat. If we need more resources, we just have to work harder. This is why we are not seeking God — we do not need Him, we are not desperate for His help. This is the state of our country and our churches. The American Dream denies the need for God. The Kingdom of God consists not of talk but of power (1 Corinthians 4:20). If and when we seek God first and His Kingdom, God promises us that we will experience God’s power in our lives. The Well Church, during this Lenten season, let us not rely on what we have, i.e., our time, talents, and treasures, but on Jesus Christ, the source of life. Let us seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and be fools for Christ (Matthew 6:33; 1 Corinthians 4:10). Soli Deo Gloria!
