Let your light shine
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1:5
In this verse, John uses a common theme of light and darkness to illustrate good and evil. The Word is light, and the darkness has not overcome it. Overcoming can have two different meanings in this verse. First, it has the idea of understanding. Humanity could not understand the light. A second meaning is to defeat. In this sense, all the forces of Satan tried to overthrow the light, but they could not. So, which definition did John intend in his writing? We do not know, but he may have meant both. Interestingly, Christ calls believers to shine his light on others. He said,
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:14-16
Dear Church, are you shining the light of Christ on this world? As we continue to walk in this world, let us look to Jesus today and every day and shine the light of Christ before others.
