a humble attitude
Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:6-8

John's appearance and lifestyle sharply differed from the cultural norms of his time. As a member of the Essenes, he chose a simple existence, living in the wilderness, clothed in camel's hair, and surviving on a diet of locusts and wild honey. This intentional humility reflected his heart's posture, recognizing his unworthiness compared to the coming Messiah. John's humility challenges us to examine our own attitudes, reminding us that true greatness in God's kingdom is marked by a heart of service and humility.
John's proclamation of Jesus being "mightier than I" emphasizes his understanding of the Messiah's unprecedented significance. He expressed such reverence that he didn't feel worthy to untie the sandals of the coming Savior. This attitude of deference prompts us to reflect on our own view of Jesus. Dear Church, just as John prepared hearts for the coming of Jesus, let us prepare our hearts to receive the Holy Spirit's refining work. May you embrace a life marked by servanthood, acknowledge the majesty of Christ, and allow the Holy Spirit to ignite a fire of transformation within you. As you yield to the Holy Spirit's work, may you become vessels of His power, reflecting the glory of God.
