Idol Factory

And now they sin more and more, and make for themselves metal images, idols skillfully made of their silver, all of them the work of craftsmen. —Hosea 13:2a

Yesterday we looked at the temporal nature of our prosperity. In today’s verse, we see how Ephraim’s success caused them to sin repeatedly. In their desire to accumulate power and wealth, they disobeyed God’s commandments by making idols of precious metals and worshipping other gods. Ironically, they spent a lot of their wealth in their sin.

The Well Church, what idols do you have that are causing you to sin? Calvin said that our hearts are idol factories. Every good thing can become idols, including ministry, missions, and relationships, when we elevate their significance above God. Let us lay down our idols today at the foot of the cross and trust in Him alone.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. —Exodus 20:4-6
