Honor, not help

Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, —James 1:9

Happy Labor Day! How do you honor the poor? James is calling on the church to have a biblical perspective on the “lowly brother.” In Jesus’ first words of his ministry, he quoted Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18a).

The Well Church, let us not be satisfied with merely helping our lowly neighbors. Let us ask God to give us compassion and love so that we may honor them. We can only do this through the power of Jesus’ love.

We love because he first loved us. —1 John 4:19
