Christmas Service

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- Isaiah 9:2

This year Christmas falls on a Sunday. Some churches have decided to cancel service, including a church in eastern Nebraska. Their executive pastor commented to the New York Times, "We still believe in the Sunday morning experience, but we have to meet people where they are." They will offer a community breakfast but no church services.

Christmas is considered by many, including non-believers, to be an important holiday of the year, second to Easter. I believe that the churches canceling services on Christmas Day are missing the point of church. Worship service is not centered on man but on God. When we cancel church when it's inconvenient, we have made church about us.

Dear Church, this year, we will have a joint worship service on Christmas Day with Christ Community Church at 10:30 am. Pastor Mike and I will be preaching a sermon together. I encourage you to come, celebrate Christmas together, and worship your Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. - Isaiah 9:7
