Offended?

And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
- John 5:16

In today's text, the Jewish leaders felt threatened by Jesus because he went against their rules. Keeping their rules was their idol, and when Jesus exposed the idols of their heart, their response was to attack Jesus. They were offended by Jesus and his message.

Many of us have idols in our hearts that we fiercely guard, whether it is pride, self, safety, comfort, family, or church. What are your idols? What keeps you up at night? God is challenging us to place our trust in Him over our idols.

The Well Church, let us not respond in the way of the Jewish leaders to the Holy Spirit's prompting. What passages of the Bible offend you? Let us heed the Apostle Paul's instruction in Colossians.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
- Colossians 3:1–3

Let us lay down our idols and seek heavenly things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
- Matthew 6:33
