Searching the Scriptures
"[39] You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, [40] yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life."
- John 5:39-40
Studying Scripture alone does not give you eternal life. The Jewish religious leaders knew and studied the Law but failed to apply its words to their lives, and they also failed to see Jesus Christ to whom the Scriptures pointed.
The Apostle Paul teaches Timothy that studying Scriptures should lead to salvation in Jesus Christ. He writes,
You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.
- 2 Timothy 3:15 (NLT)
Dear Church, let us remember that knowledge does not necessarily lead to faith in Jesus Christ. In verse 40, we see that the leaders did not want to come to Jesus -- they refused him, and no amount of proof would lead them to Jesus Christ.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."
- Ephesians 2:8
We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone for the glory of God alone.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- 1 Corinthians 10:31
