Do without Grumbling

So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered them, "Do not grumble among yourselves. - John 6:41-43

When the religious leaders, who knew Jesus from when he was a child, heard Jesus speak with authority, they could not believe him and grumbled among themselves. Grumbling is a sign of discontent. The religious leaders were discontent because Jesus threatened their position of authority, and they did not want to lose control of what gave them power. Their motivation to serve the people of Israel was for their benefit, so they grumbled when they saw the potential to lose their advantage.

The Apostle Paul instructs in Philippians 2:14,

"Do all things without grumbling or disputing."

We must serve God with a pure heart. In other words, our motivation must be on heavenly things.

The Well Church, what is your motivation when you serve Jesus? If your reason is to gain favor from him, then our desire is no different than the religious leaders depicted above. All who believe in Christ have already received God's love, grace, and mercy. Christ is enough!

As we look to the cross, let us worship and serve Him wholeheartedly without grumbling for who He is — our master, savior, creator, and God.
