Sufficiency of Scripture
Forever, O LORD, your word
is firmly fixed in the heavens.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
you have established the earth,
and it stands fast. - Psalm 119:89-90
These verses stress how God’s word expresses his faithfulness, and its terms are therefore firmly fixed. His word is trustworthy. Do you trust in God’s word as your life depends on it?
In 2 Timothy 3, the Apostle Paul teaches,
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The completeness expressed by Paul is that Scripture can thoroughly equip a believer for every good work. Theologians call this view the Sufficiency of Scripture, an essential doctrine of the Christian faith.
Brother and sisters in Christ, as the Apostle Paul teaches, we need to make the Bible our priority, not our surrounding culture. We must trust in God’s word as our lives depend on it, even in difficult times, as it teaches everything we must believe and how we can please God. The Sufficiency of Scripture reminds us that God has already told us what we need to know to be “complete, equipped for every good work.” As Jesus prayed,
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” - John 17:17
