Love and Devotion
Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." JOHN 12:7-8
In today's text, Judas and some other disciples criticize Mary for wasting resources, but Jesus defends her and tells them to leave her alone so that she can keep it for the day of his burial. However, it's unclear what it refers to; some suggest that Mary might have collected the ointment for reuse, while others propose different interpretations. What could it be?
This event takes place six days before Jesus' crucifixion, and when Jesus says, "you do not always have me," he is referring to his imminent death and ascension. Jesus saw the significance of Mary's act and knew that she would always remember this day on the day of his burial.
Today’s devotional reminds us of the importance of prioritizing our relationships with God over material possessions or other concerns. Jesus wasn't dismissing the importance of caring for the poor, but he emphasized the importance of focusing on the things that truly matter in life.
Dear Church, as we follow Christ, may we also value our relationship with Him above all else and be willing to make sacrifices out of love and devotion to Him.
