John versus Judas

After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” John 13:21

In John 13, we encounter two disciples of Jesus whose lives took vastly different paths—John, the beloved disciple, and Judas Iscariot, the betrayer.

We see Jesus sharing an intimate Passover meal with His disciples, and He reveals that one among them will betray Him. A sense of sorrow and confusion hangs in the air. We see John leaning against Jesus' chest during the meal. In this position of closeness, he was near to the heart of Jesus, experiencing His love and deep fellowship. John's love for Christ was evident throughout his life.

On the other hand, we see Judas, who allowed greed and betrayal to consume him. He succumbed to the lure of Satan, betraying Jesus to the authorities. Judas had been one of the chosen disciples, witnessing firsthand the miracles and teachings of Jesus. Yet, he allowed his heart to be overtaken by darkness.

The difference between John and Judas lies in their response to the presence and teachings of Jesus. John immersed himself in the love and fellowship of Christ, nurturing a deep and abiding relationship with Him. In contrast, Judas allowed greed and worldly desires to cloud his vision and betray the very One who came to save him.

Dear Church, let us seek to develop an intimate relationship with Jesus, be near His heart, and walk faithfully in His ways. May we resist the temptations of this world, embracing the truth, grace, and love that flow abundantly from our Savior, Jesus Christ.
