Do you understand?
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? John 13:12
In today's verse, Jesus has just finished washing His disciples' feet, an act of love, humility, and servanthood. He resumes His place as Teacher and Lord and initiates a moment of reflection and instruction by asking them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?"
At the surface level, Jesus' act was a simple act of service, demonstrating His love and care for His disciples. But it goes beyond mere service; it reflects His desire to transform their hearts and show them a new way of life. Jesus laid the foundation for a life characterized by selfless love, humility, and service. As Jesus willingly took on the role of a servant, setting aside His divine glory to serve and love His disciples, He calls us to follow His example.
Dear Church, let us embrace the call to follow His example, serving others, including our enemies, with love, humility, and selflessness. And as we do so, may we bring glory to God and reflect the love of Christ in our interactions with those around us.
