Love and Obedience
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. John 14:30-31
In today's verses, we see Jesus' understanding of His mission, obedience, and love for the Father. There are several themes at play here that we can reflect upon in our own lives: the power of obedience, the victory over worldly forces, and the power of love.
Jesus acknowledges the "ruler of this world" - often understood to be Satan. He states that Satan has "no claim on me," demonstrating that He is not subject to Satan's control. But even more compelling is Jesus' declaration that He acts according to His Father's commandments.
This obedience to the Father's commandments is not due to a sense of obligation or fear but rather out of deep, abiding love. Jesus obeys because He loves the Father. It isn't about reluctant obedience out of fear of punishment but joyful obedience that flows out of love.
Jesus also displays an example of facing the trials of life, not with fear or anxiety, but with a resolve based on His relationship with God. Jesus knows the challenge that awaits Him - His crucifixion. Yet, He faces it willingly because, through this sacrifice, fulfilling God's salvation plan.
Dear Church, when facing your trials or difficulties, let us rely on our Lord Jesus Christ, who perfectly obeyed His Father, as we love and follow Him. When you feel overwhelmed by the struggles of the world, remember Jesus's words: "the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me". Through Christ, we, too, share in this victory.
