Our Advocate
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1
Today's text reminds us of the unwavering love and intercession of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us examine this verse and discover the blessings and comfort we find in Christ as our Advocate.
John acknowledges the reality of sin in our lives. He urges us to walk in righteousness, seeking to live a life that honors God. However, he admits that we are not immune to sin's temptation. In moments of weakness, we may stumble and fall. But John's words assure us that even in our shortcomings, we have hope in our advocate, Jesus Christ.
The word advocate denotes someone who comes to our defense, pleading our case before a higher authority. Jesus Christ, the righteous one, stands before the Father on our behalf. As our Advocate, He intercedes for us, presenting His perfect righteousness as the basis for our forgiveness and acceptance. He doesn't condemn us but is our defender, bridging the gap between us and God's perfect holiness.
The knowledge of Christ as our Advocate brings us immeasurable assurance. We can confidently approach God, knowing that we have Jesus Christ as our Advocate pleading our case. When guilt and condemnation overwhelm us, Christ reminds us of His atoning sacrifice and intercession. He restores our fellowship with the Father and assures us of forgiveness and restoration.
Dear Church, the truth of Christ as our Advocate should fill our hearts with gratitude and awe. May we walk in His righteousness, embrace His love, and stay the course by relying on the Holy Spirit.
