Running the Race
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
Every marathon runner knows that success is not about sprinting out of the gate but about maintaining your energy level, finding the right pace, and enduring until crossing the finish line. In the spiritual realm, our journey with Christ is no different. We are all running a spiritual marathon.
The author of Hebrews paints a vivid picture for us - of a great cloud of witnesses. These are not merely passive spectators but individuals who have run their races, facing hurdles, enduring hardships, and pressing onward. Their stories encourage us to stay the course and look to Jesus. As the founder and perfecter of our faith, He is our ultimate example. He endured unimaginable pain and suffering for the joy set before Him. When the race gets tough, and our spirits wither, turning our gaze to Christ refreshes and invigorates us.
Just as runners find strength in running groups, we find encouragement, accountability, and strength when rooted in a church community. In moments of doubt and fatigue, this community lifts us, prays for us, and helps us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
Dear Church, I pray that you continue to be part of a covenant community to share and serve one another as you run your race. Although our doors may be closing, let us remain the body of Christ. Remember, you are not running the race alone, and I will always be your pastor.
