What do you want me to do for you?

At the end of Mark 10, Jesus asks a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you?” It’s a puzzling question. The Son of God asks an obvious question to the blind man. Of course, Bartimaeus wants his sight restored. You don’t have to be the Son of God to know the answer. Yet, Jesus asks the obvious question in order to give the blind man the opportunity to express his trust and faith in Christ. Today, God is asking The Well Church, “What do you want me to do for you?” This is the question that God has been asking us since the beginning of our ministry. What do we want, Church? The answer, like Bartimaeus’ answer, is an obvious one. However, we often fall short and do not answer God. Perhaps we are afraid to ask because we are afraid of what will happen when God does answer our prayers. Uncertainty often follows the mission of God’s church. We are no exception. Faith carries us through the uncertainty. God is giving us an opportunity to express our trust and faith in him. When Jesus healed Bartimaeus, he said, “Your faith has made you well.” Let us boldly ask God in faith to make us the church that he can use to advance the gospel. Let us boldly ask God in faith to make us the church that defends the rights of the poor and needy. Let us boldly answer his question, “What do you want me to do for you?”
