Memorial Day
Many of us “celebrate” Memorial Day as the unofficial first day of summer — the public pools open, we can officially wear white, and who can forget the start of the BBQ season. Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the Civil War in 1868. It was a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Today, we observe Memorial Day by remembering those who died while serving in the military. Unlike Veterans Day, where we honor all who have served in the military, we pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom in giving their lives. In honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, let us read and pray these bible verses (from biblestudytools.com).
- The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. — Psalm 34:18
- Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. — Psalm 27:3-4
- Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. — 1 Corinthians 16:13
- Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. — Romans 13:7
- Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. — Proverbs 14:34
