A Stronger Church

But you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone — Ephesians 2:19b-20

Many of us have been taught that church is not a building. However, for many believers, including myself, church is often thought of as such - a place we go. Statements such as “I was late for church today” or “Let’s go to church” affirms such tendencies. Biblically speaking, a church is more than a building or location, it is about the people. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which means “assembly” or “called-out ones.” In Romans, Paul refers to the church as a body of believers by instructing, “Greet also the church in their home” (16:5). Therefore, we also need to understand ourselves to be the church. Interestingly, the Apostle Paul uses a metaphor of building to describe the church. In Ephesians 2, Paul says this building is built on “the foundation of the apostles and prophets,” which is the bible. In other words, the foundation of the church is the Word of God. That is why we must pay attention and study the bible. As we are looking at the Book of Psalms this summer, I encourage you to read 5 psalms a day in August. By the end of the month, you would have read through all 150 psalms. Not only do we have to study the bible, but must also obey it! The late Haddon Robinson said, “No man is better for knowing that God so loved the world of men that He gave His only begotten Son to die for their redemption. In hell there are millions who know that. Theological truth is useless until it is obeyed.” In my prayers, I sense that God is calling us, The Well Church, to study the bible together and become a stronger church.
