Poor in Spirit

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God."  - Luke 6:20b

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches, “Blessed are you who are poor.” Jesus is not saying that being poor in material things in itself is a state of blessing. Jesus is referring to being “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3). What does it mean to be poor in spirit? It means to be utterly dependent on God, in all things and at all times. Spiritual blessings come from God when we completely depend on Him. In this season of our church, I believe that God is calling us to depend on Him - not on our talents and treasures. It is easy to focus on our talents and treasures because they are tangible. When we have money in our savings account, we have a false sense of security. When we don’t have money, we rely on our abilities to make money. Money is not evil in itself, however, it so often replaces God in our lives. We start to think about money and things related to it all the time. We begin to worship money. God wants us to feel secure whether or not we have savings. Often times God takes our false security away from us so that we can learn to depend on Him. I believe that many of us have been relying on our own abilities as Christians. The Well Church, as we journey together with God, let us depend on Him alone. Let us not look at our material possessions, which are temporary. Let us focus on our treasures in heaven where moth nor rust cannot destroy (Matthew 6:19-21). Let us be poor in spirit and reap His blessings in our lives. Let us do mighty things for God.
