Pursuing a less "productive" life
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. - Colossians 3:1-2
In just a few days, Apple will be announcing the new iPhone. Many diehard fans are waiting to see what great features will be added to the $1,000 smartphone. As smartphones have helped us live a more “productive” life, Kara Alaimo from Hofstra University lists the following seven ways the smartphone has made life worse:
- They are bad for our brains.
- While we’re busy on our phones, we’re ignoring the world around us.
- We’re also ignoring one another.
- They’re ruining our relationships.
- They promote FOMO (“fear of missing out”) syndrome.
- We have come to need constant validation.
- We’re expected to be available for work 24-7.
With the advancement of technology, we are missing out on human relationships, inside and outside the church. No matter how hard technology tries to make our lives easier, smartphones and the internet cannot replace the joy of spending uninterrupted time together with a good friend over a cup of coffee. The Well Church, let us be smart and use our smartphones and not let our smartphones use us. Let us delay looking at our phone for an hour in the morning and in the evening and instead spend time with our God in reading Scripture and prayer.
