Prayer and Fasting
"[1] And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness [2] for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry." - Luke 4:1-2
While Jesus was in the wilderness being tempted by the devil, He fasted for forty days. Although the Bible does not explicitly connect fasting and prayer, the two are often associated with one another as they both have to do with a sense of utter dependence on God. As believers, we ought to fast and pray regularly. John Piper wrote, "Christian fasting, at its root, is the hunger of a homesickness for God. Christian fasting is not only the spontaneous effect of superior satisfaction in God, it is also a chosen weapon against every force in the world that would take that satisfaction away."
The Well Church, as we are facing uncertainty concerning our meeting location, I want to encourage you to fast and pray for God's guidance. Let us humble ourselves before our God and confess our need for Him.
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a safe journey for ourselves, our children, and all our goods. - Ezra 8:21
