Why the Gospels?

"Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." - John 20:30-31

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, known as the gospels, capture the life of Jesus Christ. So, why should one read the gospels? Towards the end of the Book of John, the Apostle John records his purpose statement. He writes,

"these are written so that you may believe..." - John 20:31a

The gospels are a powerful witness to the Christian faith for believers and non-believers. Faith cannot be taken for granted, and we must continually and repeatedly hear the gospels. They contain everything we need to know to believe.

Brothers and sisters, let us read the gospels anew. May the Holy Spirit lead and guide you as you hear the good news of Jesus Christ. May He strengthen your faith.

And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. - Mark 11:22–23
