Growing in the Spirit

"But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God." - John 3:21

In today's verse, Jesus teaches that those who come to light and live out the truth are genuine believers in Christ. He reminds us that believing in him is just the beginning of Christian life, and God continues to transform believers to be more like him. Believers will continue to walk towards the light and not run away from it.

The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in believers' lives is called sanctification. The Westminster Shorter Catechism question 35 states,

Q 35: What is sanctification?

Sanctification is the work of God's free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness.

Sanctification is growth!

Dear Church, as a community of believers, let us continue to grow in the Spirit and work out our salvation by surrendering to him.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. - Philippians 2:12-13
