Last Sayings of Jesus (3)
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
- John 19:26-27
The third saying is recorded only in John's Gospel and shows his care for his mother while dying on the cross. Even though he was in agony, he was mindful of his mother and made provisions for her.
In today's text, we see the extent of Christ's love. As we reflect on today's word, let us think about his love for us.
Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
your judgments are like the great deep;
man and beast you save, O LORD.
How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
- Psalm 36:5-7
