Last Sayings of Jesus (4 & 5)

"My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?"
- Matt 27:46; Mark 15:34

Jesus' fourth saying, found only in Matthew and Mark, took place at the ninth hour, around 3 pm, near the end of his life. He cries out Psalm 22:1, a psalm about misery and distress.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
- Psalm 22:1

"I Am Thirsty"
-John 19:28

Jesus' fifth saying, the shortest of the seven sayings, is recorded only by John and highlights Jesus' humanity. His plea for a drink and the offering of wine mixed with vinegar echoes Psalm 69:21.

They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
- Psalm 69:21

Dear Church, as we reflect on today's verses, let us remember the pain and agony of the cross that Christ endured for the sake of our salvation. How can you show your gratitude to Jesus?
