When the going gets tough...
The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid."
- John 6:18-20
What do you do when the going gets tough? We see in today's text that not only were the disciples traveling at night in the dark, but the wind had picked up, and the sea became rough. The sea represented chaos and disorder to the first-century Israelites, even without the strong winds. Such is life, as it is unpredictable, and in an instant, chaos and confusion can set in. Perhaps your life is represented in today's illustration.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us remember that just as Jesus appeared to the disciples amid the storm, he is all-knowing of our situation and is with us. Place your hope in Jesus Christ and wait upon him.
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.
- Psalm 40:1-3
