Service versus Communion
Today’s devotional is from this week’s pastor’s corner.
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. [And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
- Luke 10:38-42
To all the mothers, Happy Mother's Day!
Although exhausted, most mothers I know are dedicated and are willing to go the extra mile for their families and serve. However, in their busyness, many of them are not able to spend time with God, and busyness is cancer to souls. I believe that we, not just mothers, suffer from being too busy. How can we connect with God amid our busyness?
The story of Mary and Martha gives us an example of service versus communion with God. While Mary communed with God, Martha served. Can one be like Mary and Martha at the same time? Charles Spurgeon said, "We should do much service and have much communion at the same time. For this we need great grace. It is easier to serve than to commune."
Our service must flow out of our commune with God. As we gather to worship today, let us leave our distractions at the foot of the cross and focus on being in his presence.
