But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." - John 6:61-64a
We can tell a lot about our motivation on how we react to certain situations. Jesus' disciples revealed their motivation to follow Jesus when they began to grumble about his hard teachings. Many of the disciples followed Jesus because they wanted a blessing from him, whether it was physical healing, material blessings, or experiencing another miracle.
What motivates you to follow Jesus? If we live for comfort, we will not be able to sacrifice our time, talent, and treasure to follow him. When push comes to shove, many will walk away from Jesus instead of leaving everything behind to be his disciple.
Dear Church, let us look to the cross daily and receive his grace and mercy, knowing that Jesus gave himself up so we can follow him. He is Immanuel, God with us, and he equips us to follow him with his power and authority.
Let us follow Jesus because he is Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords. There is no higher authority.
