Light
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
- John 8:12
In today's text, Jesus makes his second I AM statement, "I am the light of the world." The first statement came when Jesus was preaching to the crowd after feeding thousands in Capernaum (John 6:35). As the light, Jesus fulfills the promises of the coming of the light of salvation and the light of God.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
- Psalm 27:1The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
- Isaiah 9:2
Dear Church, the Apostle John comments,
"And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
- John 3:19-21
Jesus, as the light of the world, is shining his light to save us and not condemn us. Let us no longer hide our sins and secrets in darkness but expose them to the light.
Come to Jesus and live.
