Can you handle the truth?

So the Pharisees said to him, "You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true." - John 8:13

"You can't handle the truth!" is a famous line by Jack Nicholson from the movie "A few good men." In today's text, we see from the response of the Pharisees that they did not accept Jesus' words, could not handle the truth, and needed witnesses, as prescribed in the Law of Moses.

In my pastoral ministry, I have seen people either accept the truth, reject them, or be selective by ignoring the ones they do not like and holding onto the ones they do. Alas, most church attendees fall into the latter category.

Brothers and sisters, how do you handle the truth? When we come across hard teachings, let us not simply ignore them. Let us pray to God,

"I believe; help my unbelief!" - Mark 9:24b
