God and Man
Jesus answered, "Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
- John 8:14
Jesus is fully God and fully man. This doctrine, known as the doctrine of the Incarnation, is one of many profound mysteries of God. So what is the significance of this doctrine? We will see why only Jesus can accomplish salvation.
In his response to the Pharisees, he claims to know his origin and destiny, which are in God. The testimony of Jesus is grounded in his unity with the Father, and only God can give testimony to himself. Jesus is God. From the beginning of the gospel of John, he testifies that Jesus is God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- John 1:1
Thomas recognized Jesus as God upon seeing him after his resurrection. Thomas proclaimed,
"My Lord and my God!"
- John 20:28b
Jesus is also fully man. Without being fully man, there could be no redemption. As Paul writes to Timothy, Jesus achieves salvation as a human mediator.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. - 1 Timothy 2:5
The Well Church, as we reflect on today's text, let's praise God for saving us by sending our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
