When we do not understand...
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand." John 13:6-7
In today's text, we witness Simon Peter's initial reaction to resist Jesus washing his feet. Like the other disciples, Peter viewed Jesus as their Lord and Teacher, and it seemed unthinkable to him that Jesus, the Son of God, would humble Himself to perform such a lowly task. Peter's response reveals his and others' limited understanding of Jesus' servant leadership.
But Jesus, in his infinite wisdom and love, responds to Peter with gentle reassurance. He acknowledges that Peter doesn't fully comprehend the significance of this act but assures him that understanding will come later.
This exchange between Jesus and Peter holds a valuable lesson for us. Often, we encounter situations in life where we struggle to comprehend God's actions or plans. We may question why certain events occur, why we face challenges or difficulties, or why our prayers seem unanswered. In such moments, we are like Peter, wrestling with our limited perspective and understanding. Yet, just as Jesus reassured Peter, he reassures us today that there is purpose and meaning in every circumstance, even if we cannot immediately grasp it.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
Dear Church, in our moments of confusion or doubt, let us remember Jesus' words to Peter and humbly acknowledge our limited understanding and trust in God's wisdom and sovereignty. As you surrender your questions and uncertainties to Him, may you find peace knowing He is always at work.
